foreign judgements - how they are handled in texas

How to Collect a Foreign Judgment

A foreign judgment is a judgment that was received in another state. A judgment that has been obtained in another state can be enforced in Texas.

In order to enforce a judgment from another state, you must bring an action under the Uniform Enforcement of Foreign Judgments Act ("UEFJA"). Under the UEFJA, when a copy of a properly authenticated foreign judgment is filed with the clerk of any Texas court of competent jurisdiction, it will be treated in the same manner as a judgment of the court in which the foreign judgment is filed.

In order to file a judgment under the UEFJA, you must file with the court an exemplified copy of the judgment from the Court that originally decided the matter. Upon filing this judgment in a Texas court, it will be treated as a Texas judgment and you can proceed with remedies to satisfy the judgment.
